DIASTOR at Memoriav conference

DIASTOR will be presented at the conference Memoriav meets HumanitiesDie Digital Humanities und Das Audiovisuelle Kulturgut in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. The conference investigates the uses of the cultural heritage for digital humanities. It is connected to the UNESCO World Day of the Cultural Heritage under the patronage of the Swiss UNESCO Commission.

At the same conference there will be a live presentation of Timeline of Historical Film Colors and all its functions.

Color Analysis of Caligari Near Completion

As posted earlier, the DIASTOR team conducts a color analysis of a variety of tinted and toned nitrate prints of the famous German expressionist film “Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari”. In addition to the photographical documentation and tests with various types of illumination (diffuse and collimated, different color temperatures), several analytical methods to determine the dyes and chemical compounds have been tested: Measurements with spectrophotometry, Raman spectroscopy, micro-spectrophotometry, spectral photography, semi-destructive laser ablation ICP, and X-ray fluorescence. The results of these tests will be presented on up-coming conferences.

Comparison of preliminary scanner tests

These days the DIASTOR team works on a first evaluation of the preliminary scanner tests. Here is a rough comparison of the non-standardized results from the Technicolor and the blue tinting scans.

DIASTOR starts their scanner tests

In collaboration with EYE Film Institute and several scanner manufacturers present at IBC in Amsterdam, DIASTOR has started their series of scanner tests. Based on these preliminary tests with a selection of materials – Technicolor, faded chromogenic stock,  a very dense and a high-contrast tinted print – the DIASTOR team elaborates a protocol for the standardization of the main tests. The tests aim at investigating the interaction between the scanners’ optical set-up including their illumination and sensor with a variety of different film stocks as well as handling and image processing.

DIASTOR conducts color analysis for CALIGARI restoration

DIASTOR is involved in the restoration of “Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari” (Germany 1919) by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung in Wiesbaden, currently under way under the supervision of Anke Wilkening at L`Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna.

Based on the findings of their previous research project “Film History Re-mastered” the DIASTOR research team investigates differently tinted and toned nitrate prints regarding their color schemes and the application of the various tints and tones. Our aim is to identify the colors applied and the relationships among the different prints in collaboration with Dr. Ulrich Ruedel from the British Film Institute.

An extensive photographic documentation of the colors from the 1920s has been completed by project manager Barbara Flueckiger in Bologna. Nobel prize laureate Prof. Dr. Richard R. Ernst has conducted measurements on the Raman spectroscope. Additional measurements are scheduled for next week.

Coming soon to a screen near you: HEIDI (1978)

Heidi_composite_new

Initial scanning tests have been conducted at EgliFilm in Zurich to ascertain the film material’s status of the 1st episode (of 26 in total) of the immensely popular Swiss TV-series HEIDI (1978). 3K scanning tests on the Northlight scanner, from both an interpositive made in 2003 as well as from the original 16mm camera negative (1978), edited in A & B rolls, have brought some of the material’s problems to the fore. In collaboration with the advanced video technology group at Disney Research Zurich some of these issues will be adressed in the near future. Watch this space!

Scanning Sound Formats on Sondor Resonances

NIBG at Sondor

Mid-July 2013, the Sondor Resonances scanner was put to the test at the Sondor facilities in Zollikon with various film sound materials originating from the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. Tonnie van Els and Paulo Fonseca (both of the Institute) were quickly instructed how to operate the scanner and tangible results from such sources as variable density and variable area material were obtained soon thereafter. In the picture on the far right, an Area of Interest can be seen, which can be selected to make sure that certain faulty areas are obstructed from the scan in order to obtain a better end result.

DIASTOR goes to Los Angeles

DIASTOR will be presented at the conference The Reel Thing XXXI in Los Angeles from August 21 to 23, 2013.
