Scanner tests at AV Preservation by reto.ch
On the 3rd of January 2014, DIASTOR partner Reto Kromer’s company AV Preservation by reto.ch performed DIASTOR’s scanner tests on his D-Archiver scanner. In collaboration with DIASTOR team member David Pfluger, he scanned all the different materials such as 16 mm color reversal, 35 mm Dufaycolor, 35 mm Technicolor, faded chromogenic negative, color reversal intermediate and positive, and tinted film.
The tests on this scanner are especially interesting because DIASTOR had done a sample of their preliminary scanner tests on this machine at IBC in Amsterdam. In addition to investigating the technical performance of hardware and software, it is our goal to study the influence of the scanner operator’s education and knowledge on the results. With our partner Reto Kromer we have a highly skilled and experienced person with special knowledge in the handling of historical films.
Scannertest of Lasergraphics Director at INA in Paris
Thanks to support from Steve Klenk, Galileo Digital in Irvine CA, and Jeff Ferriol, MagicHour in Paris, DIASTOR was able to continue their scanner tests with the Lasergraphics Director scanner. In December, DIASTOR team member David Pfluger traveled to Institut national de l’audiovisuel in Paris to work a whole day with their staff on DIASTOR’s scanner tests, see earlier postings here and here.
Deutsche Kinemathek Berlin teams up with DIASTOR
During the past four weeks, DIASTOR intern Manuel Joller worked at the Deutsche Kinemathek in Berlin to prepare a program of selected commercials and image films from the early color era. With support from Prof. Martin Koerber, Head Curator, Annette Groschke, Curator, and Eszter Takács they went through piles of nitrate film to find the most promising films for the DIASTOR digitisation and restoration case studies. The films will be presented at festivals and conferences in 2014. Check back to get more information about DIASTOR’s progress on these films.

New Caligari Frames Discovered
Thanks to information from Dan Streible, professor of cinema studies at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, we became aware of an additional source for our quest for the colors of Caligari (see initial post here).
The Museo del Cine Pablo C. Ducrós Hicken, Buenos Aires under the direction of Paula Felix-Didier holds a sample book of individual tinted and toned frames from “Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari”.
The restoration by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung in Wiesbaden is currently under way under the supervision of Anke Wilkening at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna and will have its premiere at the Berlinale Film Festival in February 2014.

Scanner Tests at ARRI in Munich
ARRI in Munich is the first scanner manufacturer to work on eight different materials for the DIASTOR scanner tests.
Based on the experience from the preliminary scanner tests, the DIASTOR team under the supervision of David Pfluger and Claudy Op den Kamp elaborates a protocol to standardize the tests and the results.
Currently the tested stocks include 16 mm color reversal, 35 mm Dufaycolor, 35 mm Technicolor, faded chromogenic negative, color reversal intermediate and positive, and tinted film.
A questionnaire explores aspects of handling, soft- and hardware, controls, interface, data management and documentation.
In the next few weeks the team travels to Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin to test scanners such as Kinetta, Lasergraphics Director, MWA Nova’s Flashtransfer Vario, DFT SCANITY. Further tests on RTI’s D-Archiver with implementation partner AV Preservation by Reto.ch and Filmlight Northlight as well as ARRISCAN with our partner Cinegrell Postproduction are executed directly in DIASTOR.
Three versions of tinted and toned CALIGARI images now online
In the framework of DIASTOR’s color analysis for the restoration of “Das Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” five differently tinted and toned nitrate prints were documented photographically.
The restoration by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung in Wiesbaden is currently under way under the supervision of Anke Wilkening at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna (see previous posting here) and will have its premiere at the Berlinale Film Festival in February 2014.

DIASTOR at The Reel Thing conference in Richmond
DIASTOR will present the results of the Caligari study and the preliminary scanner tests at The Reel Thing XXXII conference in connection with the AMIA conference in Richmond, on Wednesday November 6.
Harvard Film Archive collaborates with DIASTOR
Harvard Film Archive joins DIASTOR for one of their case studies, the Technicolor short film Switzerland Sportland (1952). The film will be part of a more extended program entitled “Switzerland in Technicolor”. All the films in this program showcase not only a world-famous technology but also a wonderfully picturesque image of Switzerland. Based on their study of this selection of Technicolor films, the DIASTOR research team develops a workflow to digitize dye-transfer prints as faithfully as possible.
